Chasing the Aurora Borealis: Northern Lights in the Western Chilcotin

The Magic of the Aurora Borealis
Have you ever witnessed the Northern Lights? There's something truly magical about this experience—especially here in British Columbia. The Northern Lights, also called Aurora Borealis, look like wisps of mist swirling, darting, and, some say, dancing across the sky in the northern hemisphere. Aurora is the Roman goddess of dawn; Boreas is the Greek god of the north wind. From zigzags to rippling curtains and arcs, this celestial spectacle occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun hit gaseous particles entering Earth's atmosphere on solar winds, creating fantastical colours—sometimes an array of shimmering hues, often an eerie green or translucent pink.

In British Columbia, there are many ways to see this natural wonder. Remote spots with little light pollution give the best chances. To see the aurora in BC, you should go inland and north to escape the coastal clouds. The best time is from December to March, when cold, clear nights offer longer hours of darkness. Be ready to stay up late: peak activity usually happens around midnight.
