Red Cariboo Resort – a year in review
“The beginning is the word and the end is silence. And in between are all the stories.”- Kate Atkinson
As we slowly ease into 2024, we would like to sincerely thank every one of our guests for being a part of our 2023. Hosting you here at Red Cariboo Resort, as your home away from home or a part of your vacation retreat, was a pleasure and an honor.
2023 was a year of growth, opportunities, inspiration, and resilience. Although there were some unfortunate events such as the extensive wildfires and other natural calamities across the country, there were also some noteworthy stories here at Red Cariboo Resort.
Let us take you down to the Memory Lane of 2023 in Red Cariboo Resort as we highlight some stories.
A Year of Opportunities and Growth
In 2023, Red Cariboo Resort continued to evolve and grow. We did a lot of construction and integration projects. We officially opened 6 Big Cabins in May. Each can accommodate up to 4 to 6 guests, equipped with a full fridge, microwave, Wi-Fi, cable TV, shower, and toilet. The Big Cabins are a hit to guests looking to be more immersed in nature and want a more cabin life vibe. We took measures to be more energy efficient, such as constructing a new woodshed and furnace for the Big Cabins to reduce the use of propane in winter and integrating thermal controls of each big cabin and apartment and other closed areas of the resort to the Nest App. The Nest App enables us to regulate each thermostat remotely, anytime. This ensures that the entire resort, including the apartments, is as energy-efficient as possible and that guests are as comfortable as can be. There’s no shortage of high-technology-energy-efficient stuff happening here, although we are in the middle of nature, with an unobstructed view of the night sky.
New Guests, Newfound Friends
2023 had been a year of new long-staying and returning guests here at Red Cariboo Resort. Some of our guests have been coming here so often that it’s like having a friend over when they come back. Someone familiar, someone who shares the same appreciation of the gorgeous landscape and tranquillity Red Cariboo Resort is known for. Most of them consider this as their home away from home. They request to stay in the same apartment or big cabin every time they return. Some even celebrated important occasions here like Thanksgiving, bringing friends and other family members that haven’t experienced yet the tranquility but are never short on adventures our resort offers. It was inspiring to witness how comfortable they were while here. They brought groceries with them, went into the communal kitchen in the main resort, and baked an entire turkey with all the sides during Thanksgiving. They even brought a “Happy Birthday” banner to hang in the communal kitchen because they were also celebrating a family member’s birthday. And yes, they also baked the birthday cake here in the communal kitchen. Pretty sweeeeeeeeeet, eh?! It’s not their first time here, and it's heartwarming to welcome returning guests who are excited to share experiences like these at the resort with their friends and family.
At Red Cariboo Resort, guests are not just guests. They are newfound friends who we wait to come back someday, soon.
The Summer of Fire
The Wildfires in the Summer of 2023 were arguably some of the biggest in the nation, displacing around 235,000 Canadians from their homes. Because they were so widespread, they occurred from coast to coast. The sky was heavy with black smoke. There have even been reports that the smoke reached Florida and New York in the United States.
Due to this, it was a busy summer at Red Cariboo Resort. We hosted pilots, firefighters, mechanics, and other firefighting team members. They occupied almost all the apartments and the big cabins. They stayed for weeks, and it was a delight to host them! Some of them became our breakfast-mates and dinner-mates in the communal kitchen with whom we shared exciting conversations. All of them were awesome. They all deserve a shout-out for their hard work and dedication.
Even though the wildfires brought chaos, uncertainty, and even loss to some people affected by the fires, they also got the community closer. They showed how resilient people can be in times of crisis.
Wildfires did not directly affect the resort, but we could see and smell the smoke from here.
The Best Region in the World
A month before 2023 ended, we were greeted with good news. British Columbia, the province of Canada where we are located, was named the Best Region in the WORLD! How rad is that?!
In Wanderlust’s words: “Any description of British Columbia’s landscape will only do this region an injustice, as its natural beauty has to be seen to be believed. Dramatic mountains, misty rainforests, glacial lakes and 25,000km of coastline bring with them a plethora of outdoor activities, from seeking out local wildlife (a perfect combination of bears and whales), to meeting Indigenous communities eager to show you their home through their eyes. Although exploring nature is a must, don’t forget to explore BC’s urban side too in Vancouver and Victoria, with cool neighbourhoods, boutiques, and bistros to liven up your trip.” This pretty much says it all about British Columbia. It is something else! Come check it out yourself!
Thank you to our lovely guests, our hardworking Team Red Cariboo, our reliable suppliers, our supportive industry partners, our helpful neighbours, and, of course, our loyal friends (humans and furry friends) for making 2023 a fantastic year for Red Cariboo Resort! Thank you all for being part of our story in 2023! We could not have done it without all of you!
We have so much in store for 2024! So, stay tuned!
